Satellite-based equilibrium temperature estimations
Intro
Equilibrium level temperature (Teql) or height is useful to determine:
- Penetration of an overshoot.
- Estimate the parcel theta-E.
One problem here is that thunderstorms modify the local Teql in their mature stages. Model or rawinsonde derived Teql becomes useless in areas of mature thunderstorm complexes.
Fortunately, there is a simple satellite-based technique that may serve as a good estimate of Teql in the region of mature deep convection. Take the mode of the 10.7µm brightness temperatures over the anvil of the convection in question.
